What Is a Builders Clean?
Rough clean, builders clean, sparkle clean: the three stages of post-renovation cleaning, explained without the jargon.
If you've just had building work done, you'll hear three different cleans mentioned, often interchangeably. They're not the same job, and booking the wrong one at the wrong time is how fine dust ends up back on every surface a day after you thought it was dealt with.
The Three Stages
Rough clean
Done during or immediately after the works, usually by the builders themselves: debris cleared, packaging removed, floors swept. It makes a site safe to walk through. It does not make it clean.
Builders clean
The first proper clean once the trades have left. Construction dust is removed from every surface, high to low, along with paint spots, plaster splashes, silicone smears, protective film, and sticker residue from new fittings. This is the heavy pass, and it's what most people mean when they book an after-builders clean.
Sparkle clean
The final polish just before handover or moving back in, once the last of the airborne dust has settled. Glass, chrome, and floors are buffed to show-home standard. On larger renovations, the builders clean and sparkle clean are deliberately separate visits, days apart.
Why the Dust Keeps Coming Back
Plaster and masonry dust is fine enough to hang in the air for days, long after the site looks finished.
"Clean every surface the afternoon the builders leave, and by the weekend a new film has settled on all of it."
That resettling is the whole reason the sparkle clean exists as a separate, later visit rather than an extra hour on the first one. So sequence it: builders clean once the trades are out, then the sparkle clean after a gap, as close to moving back in as you can manage.
Can You Do It Yourself?
For a single decorated room, yes: damp-wipe every surface rather than dry-dusting, and vacuum slowly. For a full refurbishment, be realistic. Fine dust clogs domestic vacuum filters quickly, and the volume of wiping involved surprises everyone who tries it.
We run after builders cleans across Eastbourne, Hailsham, and Polegate with equipment built for construction dust, as separate stages or one package.
